Stonehenge is more than a monument — it is a living site that draws tens of thousands of people each year to mark the turning points of the solar calendar. Here is a full guide to every major event in 2026.

Summer Solstice — 20–21 June 2026

This is the big one. Around the summer solstice, 24-hour open access is granted to the stones — no ticket required, no admission fee. More than 10,000 people typically gather to watch the sun rise in alignment with the Heel Stone on the morning of 21 June. The atmosphere is joyful and communal, ranging from druids in ceremonial robes to families with flasks of tea. Book your transport well in advance — roads and coaches fill up fast. Bring warm layers; even in June, a Wiltshire dawn is cold.

Spring Equinox — 20 March 2026

A smaller, quieter gathering marks the spring equinox. Dawn ceremonies are led by druid and pagan groups, and the crowd is modest enough that the experience feels genuinely intimate. Free to attend.

Autumn Equinox — 22 September 2026

The autumn equinox follows a similar format: a peaceful early-morning ceremony, soft autumn light on the stones, and a contemplative atmosphere. One of the most underrated times to visit.

Winter Solstice — 21 December 2026

Free and requiring no advance booking, the winter solstice draws several thousand visitors to watch the sun set in alignment with the monument on the shortest day of the year. Arrive early for a good position on the perimeter.

Special Access Evening Tours

Year-round, English Heritage offers Special Access Evening Tours — small groups of up to 30 people who enter the stone circle itself, outside normal opening hours. These are intimate, expert-led experiences and sell out months in advance. Book directly through the English Heritage website or via GetYourGuide.

Stone Circle Experience

Similar to the evening tours, the Stone Circle Experience gives pre-opening and post-closing access to the inner circle. Prices are higher than standard admission but the opportunity to stand among the stones without the crowds is extraordinary.

What to Bring to Outdoor Events

  • Warm, waterproof layers regardless of season
  • A torch or head torch for solstice gatherings
  • Snacks and a flask (no food vendors at the stones)
  • A fully charged phone and a backup battery
  • Camera or tripod for solstice photography — the low-angle light is spectacular
